Preparation and packing of personal equipment (SNCO / CFAV)
In this video, I will go through my own kit and equipment for a night or more in the field. This should give you an idea of some personal purchase items that may make you more comfortable in the field. At the end I will give a list of all the items I have featured. It is intended as a guide for senior cadets who may continue their career in the cadet force as a CFAV or join the regular or reserve forces.
Purchasing your own equipment can be expensive and you should never be pressured to do so. You will always be issued the necessary equipment for the activity you are undertaking. There may be some safety concerns with your own equipment, so before investing it might be worth speaking to your instructors to see if they have any advice.

Equipment List
The equipment in the video is my personal choice and in my opinion is the best for the job. I do a lot of outdoor activities and almost all of these items are transferable to other activities. So if you do Duke of Edinburgh or undertake expeditions then these items will most definitely serve a dual purpose. A complete set of equipment takes years to collect; as a cadet I did not use much that wasn’t issued to me. If you’re interested, here is my ‘best of’ recommended list:
- Rush 72 backpack by 5.11
- Basha poles by Kombat Military Products
- Bahco Laplander folding saw
- Carinthia Defence 4 sleeping bag
- Ascent Bivi by Rab
- MTP Snugpack softie smock
- Mesh stow bags by Viper Tactical
- Rab hut slippers
- Jetboil MicroMo
- Petal Tikka head torch
- Powerpax Storacell battery holder from Tools Aviation
- Petzl Bindi rechargeable head torch
- Alpha Light Long Handle Spoon by Sea to Summit
